Letters From Mrs. Segna and Ms. Justen

March 2 , 2010
Dear Families,
Last Monday we finally reached our 100th day and made use of all of those cereal boxes. We received just over 200 boxes (Yeah!), so we were able to split into two groups for our activity. Each group was to make a house that used no more and no less than 100 boxes. The two groups had entirely different design ideas. It was fun to watch how they worked together, and see their ideas take shape. Again, I appreciate the effort made to collect boxes. It wouldn’t have been possible without your help.
At the end of this month we will be taking a field trip to the Minnesota Zoo. Second and third graders will be combined for this trip, and then split into smaller groups. I’m looking for 2-3 volunteers (exact number yet to be determined) willing to chaperone. If you are interested, please let me know by sending a note with your child.
Our character of the month award goes to Joy. Joy has throughout the year shown herself to be a very honest person. She tells the truth, stays out of others’ belongings and does her own work. Congratulations Joy!
On Friday, March 19th, it is the second grade class’ turn to help with Stations of the Cross. Each child will be reading two of the stations. I will be sending home their readings. Please practice these so your child knows her readings well. Thank you!
A look at the next two weeks:
Reading
This week we will be studying the biography genre. The students will be reading about Theodore Roosevelt, Wilma Rudolph and Ellen Ochoa. Next week we begin our fifth theme, Family Time. We will be reading a nonfiction piece about siblings and will be learning about verbs and word families.
Spelling
Spelling words this week have the r-controlled o. Next week’s words end with ‘er.’
Religion
We are continuing to learn about the meaning of our prayers, discussing Lent and preparing for First Eucharist. It is a busy time!
Math
We are finishing our chapter on telling time and temperature. Our next chapter is on fractions.
Social Studies
We have been discussing immigration and emigration, including why people choose to emigrate. We will continue with discussing changes in communities over time and are also working on some map skills.
May God bless you,
April Justen
