February 16, 2010
Dear Families,
It has certainly been a year full of snow days. Due to this, our hundredth day is now Monday, February 22nd. We will need any cereal boxes you have collected by that date. They’re piling up quite high in the classroom – I can only imagine the space they’ll take up when we have them all!
We will soon be starting a unit on history. As part of this, I would like for the children to learn a little about their family’s history. You will be sent home a questionnaire to fill out, which will ask for names of family members as well as addresses for grandparents. Please take the time to fill it out and return it by the date listed on the form. Thank you for your help!
Parent/teacher conferences are tonight and tomorrow night. I hope to see you all then.
A look at the next two weeks:
Reading
This week we will be reading a telling of a Muskogee legend that tells how birds came to migrate. We will be learning about cause and effect, as well as plural possessive nouns. Next week we will be comparing a fiction and nonfiction selection about dinosaurs. Along with the story we will be working on reviewing various skills.
Spelling
Spelling words this week have long o spelling patterns. Next week’s words are a review of the words given in this theme.
Religion
Lent begins this week, so we will be discussing the season.
Math
We are about to finish our chapter on counting change. Even though it’s nearly complete, take every opportunity you have to practice this with your child. Perhaps let him count the change you get back from a purchase. Even just skip counting when there are a few extra minutes will help to build those skills. Our next chapter is on telling time and reading temperature. Skip counting will also be helpful in this chapter.
Science/Social Studies
We are wrapping up our unit on motion. From here we will be doing a Social Studies unit on history.
May God bless you,
April Justen
